Tee It Up Fore Autism: Learning your child has autism can be a devastating and confusing experience for a family. On May 7, golf enthusiasts will raise funding and awareness of a disorder that affects 1 in every 110 births in the U.S. and nearly 1 in 70 boys. Lily’s Foundation, a newly formed non-profit organization in Everett, will host the first annual Tee It Up Fore Autism Awareness, presented by Honda of Kirkland. Proceeds from the golf tournament will benefit Autism Speaks. The event, which begins at 1 p.m. May 7, will include a 4-person scramble, tournament giveaways, prizes and dinner following golf at The Golf Club at Echo Falls in Snohomish.

Neighborhood University: Current Kirkland residents, as well as residents in the annexation neighborhoods are invited to celebrate and welcome Kirkland’s neighborhoods during the Neighborhood University event, which runs from 6-9 p.m. May 11 in the Juanita Elementary School cafeteria, 9635 Northeast 132nd St. The Kirkland City Council will provide free pizza. Learn about city programs and services (from street maintenance to recycling). Hear from neighborhood leaders about running effective neighborhoods, getting things done, partnering with schools and working with the city. Bring in Spring at the Kirkland Home Show: My Home Furniture & Décor hosts a pet-themed, family-oriented fund-raising event, “Bring in Spring at the Kirkland Home Show” from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 13-14 at the furniture and decorating center, 11700 N.E. 118th St. The event features animal-related entertainment, therapy dogs, trainers, photographers, food booths and a variety of pet-related exhibitors — including a llama named “Maurisco,” who will plant big kisses on children’s cheeks, for a cash donation to Camp Korey. NAMI Washington Walk: Walk for mental health during the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Walk on May 14 at the Marina Park. Check in begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk starts at 9:30 a.m. Presented by Fairfax Hospital, the walk is all about mental health awareness and raising financial support for NAMI’s free programs that help people living with mental illness and their families. Free Recycling Event: St. John’s Episcopal Church is hosting a free recycling event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14 at 127 State St. The church has teamed up with Issaquah’s non-profit 1 Green Planet to offer this free recycling opportunity. Bring your recyclable items – from computers to cars, modems to motorcycles and laptops to lawn mowers – it doesn’t matter if they work or not. Butterfly Garden Grand Opening: The public is invited to attend the Butterfly Life-Cycle Demonstration Garden’s grand opening at noon May 14, following the Green Kirkland Partnership/Earth Corps work party at Carillon Woods Park in Kirkland. Mayor Joan McBride will cut the ribbon, and special guest Idie Ulsh, founder of the Washington Butterfly Association will speak briefly, followed by butterfly-related family activities. The garden is funded by a Neighborhood Connections Grant and a Boeing grant to the regional office of the National Wildlife Federation. Volunteers have performed the garden’s design, planting and maintenance, coordinated by the Kirkland Wildlife Habitat Team.

Music for Life: The public is invited to a special concert, “Music for Life,” that will benefit Kadee Scott, a Kirkland native who received a kidney transplant in November after suffering from complete kidney failure due to Lupus. After waiting for four-and-a-half years, a friend of Scott’s offered to donate a kidney. After a series of tests doctors were able to confirm that her friend was a perfect match. Scott’s mother, Donna Raymond is organizing the benefit. “Music for Life” will begin at 2 p.m. May 15 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 105 State St. Groups performing at this event include the women’s accapella chorus, The Spirit of Sound Singers, the Inglemoor Wind Trio, Mike Dadaro and Diane Althaus and the local Christian group Steadfast. Admission is free, but donations are gladly accepted. Donations will go to the National Transplant Assistance Fund, the leader in fund-raising assistance and support for transplant and catastrophic injury. Contributions are tax-deductable. Urban Forest Restoration Event: Join a group of students from the UW Bothell campus in removing blackberries and other invasive plants from Juanita Bay Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 15 at 2201 Market St. Sign up for this project online at www.earthcorps.org.

Friends of Youth 60th Anniversary Reception: Dr. Wayne Strom will be the keynote speaker at the 60th Anniversary Reception for Friends of Youth to be held from 4-6 p.m. May 18 at the Harbor Club in Bellevue. Strom was hired by Friends of Youth to serve as its executive director in 1962 and served until 1968. He was 27 when he was hired and was interested in the position because he had always wanted to run a home for boys. For information, visit www.friendsofyouth.org.

Benefit River Rafting Trip for Hopelink: Escape the rain, have an adventure and help out Hopelink during this Wenatchee River rafting trip on May 21 in Leavenworth. This is a family event for ages 10 and up. Rivers Inc. will provide all rafting gear, great guide, comfy wetsuit, and a hearty riverside buffet lunch. Cost is $65 per person; all proceeds go directly to Hopelink. Must register with full payment one week in advance.
