The Calabrisella Italian Restaurant’s first attempt to bring a combination of opera arias and musical theatre Dec. 6 was a surprising success.
An attractive cast of young singers and a piano accompanist entertained a well attended audience of music enthusiasts. Familiar and popular music by Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti and selections from “Phantom of the Opera,” “Les Miserables,” and “Sweeney Todd” were beautifully interpreted by a professional cast consisting notably of Marcus Shelton (tenor), Jennifer Bromagan (soprano), Sarah Fletcher (soprano), Ryan Francis (baritone), Craig Nim (bass/baritone) and accompanist Jeffrey Moidel.
In spite of parking, construction and seating issues, the dinner-music show was catered to by the cooks and wait staff of Calabrisella.
Robin Maiers, house piano player, spokesman and event promoter, was gratified with the success of the evening. The opening night salvo brought home the realization (to Calabrisella owner Jesus Acosta) that there is a strong desire at large for a presentation and a devoted audience for a venue such as this, offered by the restaurant. Maiers would like to see the Calabrisella as a showcase center for opera and musical theatre artists and audiences receptive to traditional and challenging fare where the repertoire and the performers are ever-evolving as to make each show fresh and inviting.
The event was produced by Dick Engstrom, board member of the Performing Arts Festival. The next dinner/musical evening will be Jan. 10, 2010.
