Local low-income residents can receive up to $1,000 to help with heating bills this year, through two programs available at Hopelink.

If residents qualify for the program, they can receive assistance even if they are not behind on their bill and/or have not received a shut-off notice.

Grants range from $100-$1,000 per household and vary from year-to-year, based on heating costs over the previous 12 months, household income and household size.

With cold temperatures in the region expected to continue, Hopelink is hoping to ensure that families and individuals are able to stay safe and warm and that households do not have to choose between heat and electricity or other necessities, such as food, health care or shelter.

The federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program helps with the cost of electric, gas, oil, propane and wood.

Meanwhile, for Puget Sound Energy (PSE) customers, Hopelink also offers help with gas and electric costs through the PSE Help program. Assistance is available to both renters and homeowners who income qualify and live within the Hopelink service area.

Energy assistance appointments are currently available at all five Hopelink centers (Redmond, Bellevue, Kirkland, Carnation and Shoreline). Phone appointments are also available.

Those who are experiencing disconnection from their heat source or have less than 10 days’ supply of heating fuel (oil, propane, wood), can contact their nearest Hopelink center to schedule a crisis appointment.

In 2018, Hopelink provided nearly $3.4 million in energy assistance to 4,145 households. The average amount provided per household was $710, and the program is fully funded for 2019.
