The Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) in Kirkland is offering summer camps and programs for children and adults.
LWTech will hold two STEM summer camps designed for middle and high school children. In addition to the STEM camps, LWTech will also offer several summer programs for adults and high school students in the areas of Multimedia Design and Production (MMDP), Engineering and Architecture, and Fast Track Academics. These programs feature several new and innovative courses, such as Tiny House Design, Tiny House Building, Computer Aided Design (CAD) Competition, and much more.
The STEM camps are offered as a series of four one-week camps that are full-day sessions from July 10 through Aug. 3. The first two weeks of the camps are intended for current high school students, and focus on the areas of rocket and robot engineering and biotechnology. The second two weeks of the camps are for middle-school-aged kids, and feature an “Our Planet” theme that examines space exploration and colonization. All STEM camps are led by LWTech professors and include scientific field trips, free lab coats, and lunches. High-school-aged participants can also earn college credits for the camps they attend.
Other summer courses that LWTech is offering are in the areas of Engineering and Architecture, Multimedia and Design Production (MMDP), and Fast Track Academics. Many of these courses are designed for ages 15 and older, with the exception of the Fast-Track courses, which are for adult students. Summer courses run from July 5 through Aug. 29.
The Summer Architecture program features two courses on Tiny Houses: Design a Tiny House and Build a Tiny House. Students will learn how to design a tiny house using the CAD program of their choice and create a physical model fabricated in LWTech’s Design, Innovation, Research and Technology (DIRT) makerspace lab. Students in the Build a Tiny House class will be able to construct a house during Summer quarter. Also offered as part of the Engineering and Architecture summer program is a CAD Competition class, where students will compete in teams to create real-life mechanical engineering designs and drawings and complex interactive designs.
There are six innovative MMDP classes available this summer: Comic Book Production Workshop, Motion Capture Animation Workshop, Create a Virtual Reality Game in a Month, Modeling and 3D Printing Workshop, Drones: Aerial Cinematography and Photography, and Create a Crowdfunding Video to Raise Money for Your Idea or Cause.
Fast-Track courses are for students who want to earn transferable academic college credits in four weeks through hybrid classes, which are delivered in-class and part online. Students starting college in the fall, or those who want to take classes over the summer and transfer them to their school, can take English, Math, and Psychology classes. The classes are all part of the Washington First Year Transfer List, meaning they will transfer as general education requirement(s) to any other public and most private higher education institutions in the state.
All summer camps and courses offer college credit. Registration is now open, except for the Fast Track courses, which opens on May 12, 2017. Exact dates and registration forms are available online at lwtech.edu/summer.
