Kirkland’s Starry Nights Catering to compete on Food Network’s ‘Cake Challenge’ Sunday

Kirkland’s own Starry Nights Catering & Gourmet Cakes will be appearing on The Food Network at 8p.m. Sunday, March 20.

As “chef-testants” on Food Network’s hugely popular series “Cake Challenge!”, Starry Nights will compete against three other bakeries to create a demolition derby-themed cake – and win a $10,000 prize.

Starry Nights Catering, owned and managed by Executive Chef Matt Jones, is no newcomer to food TV. Back in 2007, he appeared on The Travel Channel’s “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” when it filmed its Pacific Northwest episode. “Cooking for Bourdain was one of the highlights of my career,” says Jones. “But every chef wants to be on the Food Network!”

“Cake Challenge,” hosted by Food Network’s Claire Robinson, pits four renown pastry chefs against each other in an eight-hour themed contest to create the most unique and exciting cake. For this challenge, Starry Nights pastry chefs Heather Freier and Paul Quinn created two separate cakes themed after a demolition derby. One cake is a super-sized demo derby car, and the other is a smaller remote controlled cake car to compete in an actual cake demolition derby.

To celebrate their Food Network TV debut, Starry Nights Catering & Gourmet Cakes will be hosting a viewing party at 7 p.m. Sunday at Bad Monkey Bistro, 400 Boren Avenue North in Seattle. The public is welcome, and yes, there will be cake.

Says Freier, “We can’t tell you who wins- but I will say it was the most fun I’ve ever had making cake!”
