Many people will assemble or purchase an emergency preparedness kit and assume that they are ready for anything.
We recommend that you supplement your kit with items that would add to your personal comfort and safety such as:
Additional water – The American Red Cross recommends that one gallon of water per person per day be available for drinking water, food preparation and hygiene.
Water should be stored in clean, plastic containers and changed every 6 months to keep it fresh unless a water preserver is used.
Thin wall water jugs are not recommended.
Additional food – The American Red Cross recommends 1200-1500 calories per person per day. Supplement your kit with canned goods and other non perishable foods that don’t need to be heated or require water.
Medications – Don’t forget to keep an extra prescription of any medications you or your family may require. This medication should be replaced before the stated expiration date.
Extra clothing and sturdy shoes, extra batteries, and trash bags.
An extra set of car/house keys, cash and a credit card.
Entertainment items, such as a deck of cards.
Items to meet special needs, such as baby formula and diapers.
When a storm is on the way
If you begin to hear that a storm is approaching the area, remember these tips:
• Remove any items that are hanging just outside the home. High winds can make these hazardous.
• Pick up any debris that may get blown around.
• Secure any items (like patio tables and umbrella shades) that could become dangerous.
• Know where and how to turn off your water, power and gas lines in case there is a problem with them such as burst water pipes freezing.
• Check your flashlights and radios for fresh batteries.
• Make sure that cellphones are fully charged.
• Fill your vehicle’s gas tank.
• Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
• Have a plan for your children or other loved ones who may be at school or in day-care if they are released early or you’re delayed in getting home.
