Kamiakin Junior High student Oliver Hu will be one of several youthful musical talents set to showcase their musical compositions at a Seattle Symphony performance May 4.
Orchestra musicians will premiere chamber works written by 10 local teen composers in a free performance on Monday at 8 p.m. in the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall.
Hu’s musical piece – titled “Winter” – is part of a concert marking the completion of a prestigious 12-week program, the David Diamond Young Composer’s Workshop and led by Seattle Symphony Composer in Residence Samuel Jones. He is the youngest participant in the program.
Each teen composer will briefly discuss the inspiration behind his or her piece before its performance, providing audiences with insight into the musical ideas of the next generation of composers. Seattle Symphony Music Director Gerard Schwarz will host the event and free general admission seating will begin 30 minutes prior to the performance.
This year’s concert also features the works of teen composers Benjamin Davis, Rio Bacon and Jason Wang of Bellevue; Matt Reed of Buckley; Kailee Wright of Kent; Robert Yaman of Lake Forest Park; Brandon Becker of Tacoma; Achil Jackson and Lennart Jansson, both from Seattle.
Participants are selected for the workshop based on submitted scores. The David Diamond Young Composers Workshop is a project of the Seattle Symphony’s Education and Community Programs Department. Named in honor of Diamond – an honorary composer with the Seattle Symphony – after his passing in 2005, the workshop was begun in 1992 under the direction of then-Symphony Music Director Gerard Schwarz and former Composer in Residence Bright Sheng.
The David Diamond Young Composers Workshop Recital will be directed by Symphony Composer in Residence Samuel Jones and performed by Symphony Orchestra members Mariel Bailey, violin; Stephen Bryant, violin; Sayaka Kokubo, viola; Bruce Bailey, cello; Roberta Hansen Downey, cello; Jennifer Godfrey, bass; Larey McDaniel, clarinet; Mike Gamburg, bassoon; Ben Hausmann, oboe; Zartouhi Dombourian-Eby, flute; Susan Carroll, horn; Matthew Kocmieroski, percussion.
