The Washington Wind Symphony will present “Legacies” at 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 5 at the Kirkland Performance Center.

The performance features composer Aaron Copland’s works.

For this concert, conductor Dr. Ed Powell has assembled an elite collection of music compositions, both classic and modern:

“An Outdoor Adventure” — Composed by Aaron Copland and ironically premiered indoors, this optimistic and airy piece begins with a bright fanfare and marches on to a joyous conclusion.

“The Sun Shall Rise Again” — As we approach the second anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami off the coast of northeastern Japan, we’ll honor the survivors with this meaningful memorial by British composer Philip Sparke.

“Grand Partita” – Movements one, three and seven — This chamber music/serenade for winds was penned by the incomparable Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

“William Byrd Suite” — Listeners don’t have to be a Downton Abbey devotee to appreciate the melodic and dignified flavor of this very British work, composed by Renaissance master Gordon Jacob.

“Allerseelin” — Richard Strauss’ musically poetic interpretation of “All Souls’ Day,” this piece is said to have been composed when he was 18.

“Children’s March” — Percy Grainger created this audience favorite for his “playmate beyond the hills,” a Scandinavian beauty who he never married, due to his possessive mother’s jealousy.
