Catharine Handfelt, Kirkland photographer and creator of “100 Hounds of Kirkland” (TM) – a series of photographs showcasing canines
all over Kirkland – announced that the “100 Hounds of Kirkland 2010 Calendar” will be available for purchase on Nov. 12 at several Kirkland-area dog-loving stores. Handfelt also announced that Seattleʼs Cultivate Books will publish “100 Hounds of Kirkland” – her photography book featuring 100-plus Kirkland dogs – coming spring 2010.
Handfeltʼs “100 Hounds” idea started last spring when a Liberty 123 employee asked her to do a photo shoot of her dog “Boomer” and his “dad” for Fatherʼs Day. After the fun of that day on Waverly Beach, Handfelt decided to do a pro bono calendar of Kirkland dogs and the idea took off. Handfelt advertised “free photo shoots” benefitting the Seattle Humane Society, and spent the summer photographing more than 150 Kirkland dogs. She unveiled her photos on Kirkland’s Park Lane in September at the firstever “Bark the Vote” event, allowing the public to vote for
their favorite “hounds” for the 2010 calendar, raising more than $12,000 for the Seattle Humane Society.
The first-ever four-color, custom designed Kirkland dog calendar will feature full-color photography of the calendar dogs, with net calendar proceeds going to the Seattle Humane Society.
“We canʼt thank Cathy enough for using her fabulous portraits of dogs to benefit the many animals in need at the Seattle Humane Society,” said Brenda Barnette, the CEO of the Seattle Humane Society (www.seattlehumane.org).
Calendar sales will kick off from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Liberty 123. On Nov. 12, the calendar will be available at several dog-loving Kirkland stores, including: Liberty 123, KOAP Home, Simplicity Decor, Northwest Cellars, Dooleyʼs Dog House, Bombaii Cutters and Barkz.
From 12-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, Northwest Cellars of Kirkland will host an afternoon event. At both events, “100 Hounds” fans can meet “100 Hounds” Handfelt and her dog Barkley, enjoy a Rescue Red tasting, purchase the new calendar, and hear more about the “100 Hounds” book project.
Limited run on the calendar! Cost: $20 each.
Kirkland hound lovers also can look forward to Spring 2010 and “100 Hounds of Kirkland,” the book, featuring photography from Handfeltʼs recent photographic canine odyssey. Kirkland dog parents can register their hounds in the “Lucky Dog Drawing” through Dec. 24, when two winners will be selected for free photo shoots and inclusion in the book. Register at Simplicity Decor, Liberty 123 or KOAP Home.
