The Bellevue, Kirkland, and Redmond Police Departments, in collaboration with Eastside Domestic Violence Program, encourage everyone to observe October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Although domestic violence (DV) can have broad terms, cases that police most often respond to involve intimate partner relationships or family members.

Regardless of a person’s understanding of DV, there is a role for everyone:

• Know what domestic violence is

• DV isn’t just about physical harm. It is also …

• The infliction of fear of imminent physical harm

• Stalking

• Power and control

• Financial abuse

• Sexual abuse

• Psychological abuse

• Isolation

• Manipulation

If someone you know is a victim

Call 911 if in immediate danger or a local confidential advocacy program, such as Eastside Domestic Violence Program.

Agencies make every effort to keep victims safe and have language lines for those who speak English as a second language. Bellevue, Kirkland, and Redmond Police Departments have advocates to help guide victims through the legal process and can answer questions.

Those experiencing violence often feel there is no solution or feel alone, but there are resources available to keep individuals safer.

Nobody deserves to experience domestic violence. It’s not the victim’s fault. The victim is never alone, ask for help.

Domestic violence has no boundaries. It does not discriminate based on ethnicity, class, gender, or religion. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four women and one in nine men in the United States are victims of DV at some point in their lives.
