The state Department of Ecology (Ecology), King County Sheriff’s Department, and Kirkland City Marina staff managed the response to a boat sinking at the Kirkland City Marina, on Lake Washington Sunday.
A 32-foot privately owned power boat was reported submerged at the marina at about 6:45 a.m. Sunday.
The boat was carrying up to 55 gallons of gasoline, and gasoline leaked into the water. An Ecology spill response team was onsite to contain the spill. High winds on the lake allowed Ecology to use absorbent materials to collect as much of the gasoline as possible. Ordinarily, this containment method is too dangerous when gasoline is involved, due to the highly explosive nature of the fumes. About four gallons spilled and one gallon had been recovered as of Sunday afternoon.
Vessel Assist, a salvage company, was on site to raise the boat. Investigation as to the cause of the sinking is ongoing.
