The 2010 Census made a big impact on the Kirkland neighborhood of Finn Hill when it comes to government representation. Those changes seem to be too much for some to keep up with.
As a result, the neighborhood was switched from the 32nd to the 1st Legislative District.
Other changes include a new congressional district and new representation for the area on the King County Council.
The new 1st Legislative District will present one of the longest-running incumbents in Olympia.
Democrat Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe has represented the 1st District since 1993 and is seeking re-election. McAuliffe, 71, is most known for her commitment to education. According to the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission, McAuliffe has already raised more than $15,000.
McAuliffe will face a top-two primary on Aug. 7, as she is being challenged by both a Republican and a Democrat. Two-term Northshore School Board member and former president, Dawn McCravey is running against McAuliffe as a Republican and is also running to improve education in Washington State. McCravey has raised more than $7,000, according to the PDC.
Democrat Guy Palumbo will also be on the August ballot. Palumbo is also running to reform education but his website also puts an emphasis on making government run more like a business and helping small businesses. Palumbo’s fund raising has dwarfed his opponents, raising more than $63,000 already, according to the PDC.
Rep. Derek Stanford, a Democrat, is looking to be elected to his second term in Pos. 1 for the district. Stanford has raised nearly $19,000, according to the PDC. He will also face the primary election, as he is being challenged by three candidates.
Republicans Sandy Guinn and Brian Travis will challenge Stanford for Pos. 1. Guinn has served on the Bothell City Council and as Deputy Mayor. Guinn has no record of fund raising with the PDC. Guinn ran against Stanford in 2010.
The PDC has no record of Travis fund raising thus far and cites transportation, education and state’s rights as his main priorities on his website.
Greg Rankich is running for Pos. 1 as a Democrat. His website was still under construction as of press time and the PDC has no record of fund raising for the candidate. Rankich is the president and CEO of Xtreme Consulting Group, a business and IT consulting firm based in Kirkland. He recently made a $3 million donation to the Washington State University athletic department.
Democrat Luis Moscoso is running unopposed for Pos. 2 and has raised nearly $23,000 for his re-election.
