Center for Children & Youth Justice to honor Kirkland attorney

Kirkland resident Joel Benoliel of Kirkland will receive the Center for Children & Youth Justice’s seventh annual Norm Maleng Advocate for Youth Award at the organization’s breakfast fundraiser on March 6 in Seattle.

Named in honor of the late King County Prosecuting Attorney, the Norm Maleng Advocate for Youth Award recognizes those who show exemplary leadership, dedication and commitment to the youth and families of Washington state.

In 2005, Benoliel was appointed by Gov. Chris Gregoire to the Washington Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, where he served as vice chair. He is currently in his second term on the council, which was renamed the Council for Children and Families and is now part of the State Department of Early Learning.

A Seattle native and University of Washington School of Law graduate, Benoliel has had a remarkable local legal career. He joined Costco in 1992 and served as Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, retiring from the company in 2013 and currently serving as an emeritus officer.

Benoliel is a dedicated volunteer for his alma mater and was a founding Director and Officer for Washington State Mentors, a public-private partnership with the state and the business community to promote mentorship. He is a member of the Circle of Care for Children’s Hospitals in North America, and in 2008, he became a Trustee of Seattle Children’s Hospital.
