The Juanita High baseball team took an early 2-0 lead over Mercer Island on Monday, but the Islanders stormed back with eight unanswered runs for an 8-2 KingCo league win over the Rebels on Monday on Mercer Island.
Juanita (5-7 overall, 5-6) sits just behind Liberty for fourth in the KingCo 3A standings, with a rematch scheduled with Mercer Island at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13 — this time at home.
Mercer Island, on the other hand, has won five of its last six games and sits second in the league standings.
And aside from a few early holes, the Islanders’ defense was difficult to crack on Monday. Dexter Mell drew a bases-loaded walk for the opening run in the top of the first inning, and Jayson Schroeder grounded out to short stop and scored Tanner Peterson in the top of the third.
From there, nothing. The Islanders scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and never slowed down.
