EvergreenHealth is pleased to announce that Marcia Long, director of volunteer services, has been awarded the Certified in Volunteer Administration (CVA) credential by the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration. Long joins a group of 1,350 individuals across the globe to attain this credential, which is the only internationally recognized designation for volunteer administration professionals.
“Volunteers play an integral role at EvergreenHealth,” said EvergreenHealth CEO Bob Malte. “Marcia’s enthusiasm and commitment to the field of volunteer administration is contagious, and we see those qualities reflected in the dedication of our volunteers. We commend Marcia for achieving this distinguished certification.”
CVA credentials are awarded after a rigorous process that includes an extensive self-evaluation and performance-based portfolio review by a panel of certified judges. Recipients also complete a two-hour examination testing knowledge, application and analysis of skills related to volunteer resources management.
For the past nine years, Long has worked at EvergreenHealth where, she said, the volunteers are the most passionate of any she has encountered in her 22 years of experience in volunteer management.
“We are grateful to have volunteers who support our staff and programs with care, dedication and selfless service,” Long said. “Our volunteers make a positive impact across our organization. They are inspired to give back, which is truly a testament to the level of service and the far-reaching impact EvergreenHealth has in our community.”
Under Long’s tutelage, EvergreenHealth offers volunteer opportunities in areas such as hospice care, patient care, fundraising efforts and front desk support. More than 1,200 volunteers are placed in positions that match their skills, interests and schedules, and support EvergreenHealth’s commitment to helping the community live its healthiest best.
“Through our volunteer program, we give people a meaningful way to get involved that is often an experience as transformative for the volunteer as it is for those they serve,” Long said.
Long also holds a Certified Administrator of Volunteer Services (CAVS) designation, which recognizes volunteer management professionals in a health care setting. For both certifications, Long demonstrated a clear philosophy of volunteer administration, pledged to work within the professional code of ethics and exhibited her knowledge in organizational management, human resources management, accountability, leadership and advocacy.
The Association for Volunteer Administration (AVA) created the CVA credential in the early 1980s as a professional development tool for individual practitioners who mobilize and manage volunteers. In 2006, the Council for Certification in Administration assumed ownership of the CVA program, which allowed it to grow with widespread investment, visibility and support, and to be truly responsive to the changing needs of the entire spectrum of volunteer administration.
