Expansion planned for Holy Family Parish

All good things must come to an end, and at Holy Family Parish in Kirkland, that means it’s time to look at expansion.

“We’ve been blessed with two priests, and that’s not something we’ll have in the future,” said Sharon Harris, the pastoral assistant for administration with Holy Family Parish. “We’ll be down to one [priest], and we’ll lower from five masses per weekend to four.”

Eventually, the Kirkland parish plans to expand seating in the sanctuary from 586 seats to 758 in phase two of the parish master plan.

The initial phase focuses mostly on the north end of the campus, across NE 75th street from Lake Washington High School. The parish youth center, which houses preschool classes, has limited parking which forces parents to park along the street or stop in traffic to drop kids off in the morning.

The new plan adds 10 parking spaces on the north end, and allows a space for parents to drive through and drop off kids away from the street.

A new parking lot with 44 additional spaces would double as an outdoor covered play area during school hours.

“Winter can be nasty, and the kids have to stay indoors,” Harris said. “This affords them the opportunity to get outside.”

Phase one also includes a new maintenance and storage shed on the north end, and the improvement of sections of NE 119th and NE 120th streets, the latter of which would add more street parking.

Phase one of the project is expected to be completed by 2020, with the second phase completed by 2025.

The original building was completed in 1957, but destroyed by fire in July 1988.
