When a pink ribbon tied around the entire Heathman Hotel facility was a bit too much to pull off, Les Utley thought about what else the business could do to help fight breast cancer.

“We kept coming up with crazy ideas. Then the idea just morphed,” said Utley, general manager.

The business has created a pink room, complete with tasteful pink walls, curtains, artwork, furniture, towels and even pink robes and a coffee maker.

All room proceeds will benefit the Puget Sound Susan G. Komen in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“We’re really proud of it,” said Utley. “We have a long history of supporting Susan Komen in a big way. This touches a lot of people.”

Brandie Hyder, director of rooms, said staff had a fun time decorating the room.

“I didn’t realize how many shades of pink there are,” she noted.

The hotel spa is also offering pink pedicures and manicures, and select services to benefit the cause as well through Nov. 1.

So far, the room has been occupied every night – mostly by women – and Utley hopes to keep the momentum going.

“Our goal is to keep the room full every single night through October,” he said.

And if the business gains enough interest, “You never know – it may stay pink all year,” Utley added.
