High bacteria levels close Juanita beach

The Juanita Beach swim area closed last Friday after water samples taken by the King County Department of Natural Resources showed high levels of bacteria.

The area will remain closed until further notice. The county will resample the water next week.

“The average of weekly samples taken as part of the County’s Swim Beach Monitoring Program exceed the County’s bacteria threshold, making the swimming area potentially unsafe for swimming or wading,” a City of Kirkland news release said.

Officials blamed the bacteria levels on heavy rains and flows from nearby Juanita Creek. Updates regarding the closure will be posted on the city’s Web site.
