The city of Kirkland will be hosting an Arbor Day event on November 8th, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Carillon Woods Park.

Volunteers of all ages are invited to install more than 200 native plants, culminating with Mayor James Lauinger planting a Grand Fir as a special Arbor Day tree at noon.

This event is hosted by the Cascade Land Conservancy and Green Kirkland Partnership. It also supports the new Central Houghton Community Wildlife Habitat Certification project, under the auspices of the National Wildlife Federation, which promotes environmentally friendly habitats for flora and fauna. Any outdoor area that meets certain qualifications can be certified. The focus of these requirements is to provide accessible food, water, cover, and places to raise young wildlife. Each certification allows the program to grow and spread awareness of maintaining a healthy habitat for plants and animals alike.

Lake Washington High School’s Environmental Club will be participating in this event. The club consists of over 30 members, and was founded by Lake Washington graduate and current Dartmouth student Carsten Hansen, an avid environmentalist. Senior Claire Wilson is now the president of Environmental Club and is looking forward to future involvement with the city of Kirkland.

Environmentalism is a phenomenon that is sweeping the nation, especially with youth who are concerned about the future of their planet. Kirkland is a prime example of a city gone green with public awareness about environmental issues, such as this Arbor Day event and the placement of recycle bins around the downtown area.
