Professional and amateur cyclists raced through downtown Kirkland on Sunday, Aug. 10 for prizes and bragging rights for the Kirkland Criterium bike race.

According to race officials, an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 spectators witnessed the event. A “Criterium” or “Crit” is type of bicycle race on a short, closed circuit of a town or city. The Kirkland race was limited to heats of up to 45 minutes in length with the race looping through Marina Park and along Kirkland Avenue, Central Way and Main Street.

The first rider to cross the finish line at the intersection of Central Way and Lake Street without being lapped is declared the winner.

Race Director David Visintainer said organizers had received positive feedback from the community and was encouraged by the response.

“People seemed to really enjoy it and are really excited to have this in the future,” he said.
