A 19-year-old Kirkland man is recovering at Harborview Medical Center after he was cut several times during a home invasion at his Kirkland home on Saturday morning.

According to Kirkland police, the man’s parents discovered their son was missing after finding signs of struggle and items in disarray at their home, located in the 13200 block of 136th Ave. NE.

Officers responded to the burglary call and missing persons report that the parents made at 6 a.m. Saturday and found the man nearby with several injuries.

The 19-year-old had escaped from his home and was able to get help after banging and screaming on the door of a nearby neighbor.

Miles Calvert, the neighbor who helped him, said he was awoken to the man screaming for help and that “they were gonna kill him” and “he was gonna die.”

Miles Calvert said he first didn’t see anyone until he walked around to the front entrance of the house and saw the victim “just standing there.”

“I caught a look at him and he was just bloody, head to toe,” Miles Calvert said, adding it happened so fast he didn’t have pants or shoes on.

Miles Calvert, who received his EMT license in 2010, immediately went into action.

He set the victim, who had already collapsed in Miles Calvert’s arms, on the stairs. He turned his vehicle’s headlights on to assess the wounds and grabbed bungee cords to create a tourniquet for the victim’s leg, which had a huge cut. During this time he also called 911 and his father, Todd Calvert, who lived close by.

Miles Calvert said there were cuts or stab marks all over the victim.

“I thought maybe it was random, but for somebody to come in and somebody’s chopping you up … It wasn’t just a knife, it was a huge blade – a machete or an axe, I don’t know,” Miles Calvert said. “It’s hard to think it was random.”

Todd Calvert explained the new housing development Vintners Ridge, where the victim and his family lives, wraps itself around his parents’ house, which is where Miles Calvert was as he house-sat for his grandparents.

Todd Calvert said the victim and his family had moved in about 10 days ago and that the 19-year-old man had been home from college.

As soon as he got the call, he and his youngest son went to help.

“I saw large gashes in his legs, arms and head,” Todd Calvert said.

Todd Calvert helped by holding the phone to the victim’s head so he could speak to the 911 operator. At this point, the Calverts heard him say that two people, a black male and a Hispanic or Asian male, had broken into his home and he had locked himself in the bathroom because the two suspects were “trying to cut his leg off.” He also said he was worried about his parents, who were still home at the time.

“I can’t imagine waking up and finding blood all over the house and my son missing,” Todd Calvert said. “I’ve been here 27 years and this is the only thing that’s happened.”

The Calverts saw police arrive at the victim’s residence and soon the man was taken to the hospital.

The last thing Miles Calvert heard was that the victim underwent major surgery.

Todd Calvert said he’s since heard the victim is alive and his knee was able to be “fixed” but that he has permanent damage to his shoulder and arm.

Miles Calvert said his thoughts and prayers are with the family and that he is glad he was able to assist.

Police say there are no suspects available at this time and they are still actively investigating this incident.
