The John Muir Elementary community celebrated its grand opening celebration on Thursday night with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Kirkland Mayor Joan McBride, Councilwoman Amy Walen, principal Jeff DeGallier and Lake Washington School District Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce were all on hand for the event.

Since the school paired the grand opening with their annual Literacy Night, they also celebrated with 1,000 cupcakes in the shape of “The Cat in the Hat.” The mastermind was Buzz Anderson, husband of Muir’s school secretary, Gail Anderson.

In addition to the Andersons, several staff members also helped out with the cupcakes, including Debra Tipple, Lynn Kennedy, Jennifer Whalen, Jennifer Landick, Debbie Loeffler, Cynthia Cantwell and David Cantwell.

Buzz is a broadcast radio engineer who just took this up as a hobby about 10 years ago. He’s wanted to do a large-scale cupcake decorating project and this was just right.
