The Kirkland Police Department is currently investigating a threat at Juanita High School based on a vague note written in the girl’s bathroom.

At the moment, the school remains open, but Lake Washington School District Spokesperson Kathryn Reith said that school officials are waiting to hear back from the KPD as to what they should do moving forward.

According to an email sent out by JHS Principal Gary Moed to parents, a message was written on a dispenser found in the girl’s bathroom, in which nonspecific threats are made against the school. Alleged photos of the threat were posted on social media and stated: “Don’t come to school on 2/5 if you like your life. I’m sorry.” The message is signed “F.”

A KPD press release states that a student found the message and notified a staff member who then contacted school security and KPD’s School Resource Officer (SRO) who works on campus. It is not known when the message was written.

“We are looking to the Kirkland police for advice as they determine more about whether this potential threat is credible or not,” Reith said. “Obviously we want to let parents know as much as we can as soon as we can but we are really relying on the experts, which is the Kirkland Police Department, to make the determination.”

KPD Spokesperson Lt. Mike Murray said that they will have extra officers on campus Friday if school officials decide to hold school. This is the first time this has happened in recent memory.

The emails from Moed were only sent to high school parents and not to elementary and middle school parents whose students attend Juanita High School for activities such as band and orchestra classes.
Reith said that they don’t have a specific list of those students but if they decided to take further action those parents would be notified as well.
