A Bellevue woman was attending a youth Lacrosse match at Juanita High School in Kirkland when her 2004 Lexus was broken into via a shattered rear passenger door window on June 16.

Taken from inside her vehicle were her purse and its contents. Among the contents of the purse was the victim’s Apple iPad 2, which she advised the Kirkland Police Department was enabled with the “Find My iPhone” application that can be used to locate Apple devices.

The victim provided KPD officers with her iPhone and activated the app. Using this technology, the officers were able to see that the victim’s iPad 2 was traveling south on I-405 and coordinated with SeaTac Police as the iPad entered into its jurisdiction. In the course of giving updates to SeaTac Police, a vehicle was stopped and the driver arrested when the victim’s iPad was found inside. The suspect was booked into jail on charges of possessing stolen property and has an extensive criminal record of arrests and convictions for similar crimes.

The KPD would like to remind owners of Apple products capable of supporting “Find My iPhone” that this app must be installed and enabled on your device before it can be used to help locate the device in the event it is lost or stolen. The KPD also advises car owners to always lock their cars and remove all valuables when parking and leaving your car unattended. Areas prone to higher incidents of motor vehicle prowls include parks, recreational areas, youth and school sporting events.
