Kirkland resident Hope Solo was given the Golden Gloves for her efforts as the winning goalkeeper for the United States Women’s Soccer team during its World Cup win against Japan on Sunday at BC Place in Vancouver, BC. The US won the championship match 5-2 against Japan.
Solo finished the championship game with four saves against Japan.
The Golden Gloves are given to the best goalkeeper in the World Cup tournament.
Solo was the backbone of a defense that did not allow a goal for 540 consecutive minutes of play – a tournament record. The US team allowed a goal against Australia during the opening round and then did not allow another until the 28th minute of the final.
The victory is the United State’s third World Cup for women’s soccer.
