Kirkland students win big at statewide National History Day contest

Teams from three Kirkland schools participated in the statewide National History Day contest held on May 3 at Green River Community College in Auburn: International Community School (ICS), Lake Washington High School (LWHS) and STEM High School (STEM).

Teams from three Kirkland schools participated in the statewide National History Day contest held on May 3 at Green River Community College in Auburn: International Community School (ICS), Lake Washington High School (LWHS) and STEM High School (STEM).

The following students placed at that event and will move on to the National event.

Junior Individual Documentary: Mehak Mann (eighth grade), second place,  ICS – “The NY Times v US 1971: Tension Between First Amendment Rights and National Security”

Junior Group Performance: Paulina Kosykh (eighth grade) and Kaelan O’Neill (eighth grade), third place, ICS – “Conserving the Conscience: The Rights of Christian Pacifists During World War I”

Junior Group Exhibit: Rachel Leu (eighth grade) and Madelyn Vollmer (eighth grade), second place, ICS – “Child Rights through the Lens of Lewis Hine: Responsibilities of Child Welfare”

Junior Group Website: Anna Klinkenberg (eighth grade) and Jessica Robertson (eighth grade), second place, ICS – “We are all in this Boat: The Waterfront Strike Fights for Rights in 1934”

Senior Individual Documentary: Katie Brandao (junior), third place, LWHS – “Caught Between Rights and Responsibilities: the Great Smoky Mountains National Park”

Senior Individual Performance: McKenna Conlin (freshman), third place, ICS – “Gallaudet University Protests: Rights of the Students, Responsibilities of the Board”

Senior Group Exhibit: Alina Liokumovich (junior), Leina McDermott (junior) and Mia Richards (junior), first place, ICS, “The Scenic Hudson Decision of 1965: Opening the Gates to Environmental Rights”
