Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Juanita High School (JHS) Genevieve Menino a was selected as the Washington Family and Consumer Science Educators (WA-FACSE) Teacher of the Year. Menino was recognized at a luncheon at the Davenport Grand Hotel in Spokane, Wash. on Aug. 9.
The Teacher of the Year award recognizes teachers who are providing outstanding Career and Technical Education programs for youth in Family and Consumer Sciences. Recipients of this award must have made significant contributions toward innovative, unique, and novel programs that are serving to improve and family and consumer skills.
Menino has been with the CTE Department Head at JHS since 2012. During her time at JHS, Menino has set the Family and Consumer Science program apart by incorporating off-site lab experiences for the Child Development Classes, partnered with the local health department to order Washington State Food Worker Cards through select JHS foods classes, and incorporated NGSS Science Standards through the implementation of Food Science Curriculum.
Not only does Menino incorporate NGSS into her Food Science class, but also into all her foods classes. Menino has partnered and collaborated with many teachers outside of her content area in order to bring common core to live in the CTE Family and Consumer Science classrooms, genetics from STEM Biotechnology into the Child Development Classroom and cell structure to baked goods are just a few of the many.
In 2014, Menino became a member of the WA-FACSE Board as a co-chair of program development, where she currently continues to serve.
Menino has been a member of WA-FACSE and ACTE, both at the state and national level, off and on since the beginning of her career in 2008 and a current member for the past four years.
