Sound Transit has passed another milestone towards the completion of the new and expanded Kirkland Transit Center, located in downtown Kirkland on Third Street between Central Way and Kirkland Avenue.
The east side of Third street has been resurfaced with new curbs, sidewalks and street pavement. Sound Transit’s contractor will now move their construction work to the west side of Third Street to continue the project.
Beginning Thursday, Oct. 14, all vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be shifted to the east side of Third Street. The single northbound (only) lane of traffic on Third Street will be maintained, except during the movement of equipment or materials.
Vehicle and pedestrian access will be temporarily closed to the alley behind the Heathman Hotel and Kirkland Square businesses via Third Street. Vehicle access to the City of Kirkland parking garage under the library will re-open on Oct. 14; however, pedestrian access will be detoured until the completion of the project.
Crosswalks at Central Way and Kirkland Avenue on the west side of Third Street are scheduled to be closed to allow for construction of a new continuous sidewalk on the west side of the street. Signs will be posted to alert the public about these changes. Pedestrians and motorists are urged to exercise caution and to obey the signs and the flagger.
The Kirkland Transit Center is scheduled for completion in January 2011. Bus service will be restored to the transit center soon thereafter.
