Kirkland firefighters and public works officials responded to a water main break on Friday evening that caused thousands of gallons of water to spill from a water main around downtown Kirkland.
Kirkland water division manager Greg Neumann said approximately 8,000 gallons of water a minute pumped through the old pipe at the corner of Third Street and Fifth Avenue.
Kirkland Fire Battalion Chief Mike Jeffery said firefighters with Engine 22 responded at around 6:30 p.m. and helped block off the road, making the scene safe until public works crews secured the break.
Although the water main is now repaired, crews will be fixing a portion of Third Street today that was damaged from the flooding, Neumann said.
No flooding or damage occurred on private property.
