A Kirkland woman died Wednesday afternoon after reportedly jumping into traffic on U.S. Highway 101 at Arch Cape, Ore., according to Oregon State Police.
At around 1:15 p.m., Jeffrey Jay Schwietert, 29, was driving a 2013 Dodge Challenger, northbound, when Connie Marie Peterman, 61, of Kirkland was walking along the northbound shoulder, but for reasons unknown, she jumped and was struck by the vehicle.
Peterman was declared dead at the scene.
Lt. Gregg Hastings with the Oregon State Police said Peterman was walking alone.
Oregon State Police troopers from the Astoria Area Command Office are continuing the investigation but the Clatsop County Medical Examiner was able to identify the woman and notify her family of the accident.
Hastings said Peterman had been staying with a relative in the area for about a month.
Oregon State Police, the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office, Cannon Beach Police Department, Cannon Beach Fire and Rescue, Medix Ambulance and Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
Highway 101 was closed for 90 minutes before one lane was opened.
