Kirkland’s Houghton Beach swim area closed until further notice due to high bacteria levels | UPDATE: Swimming area reopened

Houghton Beach Park swimming has been reopened after being closed due to high levels of bacteria in the water, according to the city of Kirkland.

The swimming area was closed last Friday following a routine water quality test by the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks. The test showed the bacteria in the water exceeded the threshold, making it potentially unsafe to swim in. The city closed the beach after receiving a recommendation from King County Public Health.

Samples were taken again on Tuesday.

Weekly samples are taken as part of the County’s Swim Beach Monitoring Program.
