The Lake Washington School District will receive the most Washington Achievement Awards from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education for 2013 than any other year in its history.
The superintendent has announced that 25 in Lake Washington School District schools will be honored. Those schools will receive a total of 46 recognitions. All award-winning schools will be honored during a ceremony on April 24 at Timberline High School in Lacey, Wash.
“The Washington Achievement Awards recognize the hard work of our students, teachers and parents,” Lake Washington School District Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce said. “I am proud that so many of the district’s schools are being recognized, and that these recognitions include awards in all areas from overall excellence to English language acquisition.”
Washington Achievement Award winners are selected using the Washington Achievement Index and criteria in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act flexibility waiver. Schools are recognized as top performers in six categories: Overall Excellence, High Progress, Reading Growth, Math Growth, five-year graduation rate and English Language Acquisition. Some schools are honored in more than one of these categories.
Seventeen LWSD schools will be recognized for overall excellence. The Kirkland schools include Discovery Community School, Juanita Elementary, Twain Elementary, International Community School and Northstar Middle School. Juanita Elementary was recognized in 2011 and 2012.
Eight LWSD schools will be recognized with high progress awards, including five in Kirkland: Sandburg Elementary, Finn Hill Middle School, Kirkland Middle School, Northstar Middle School and Lake Washington High School.
Lake Washington schools fared well in reading, with ten schools being given special recognition awards, with seven in Kirkland: Discovery Community School, Juanita Elementary, Muir Elementary, Sandburg Elementary, Twain Elementary, Northstar Middle School and Lake Washington High School.
Six special recognition awards for math will be given to Lake Washington School District elementary schools, with three in Kirkland: Discovery Community School, Muir Elementary and Twain Elementary.
For the fourth year in a row, Juanita High School will receive a Washington Achievement Award Special Recognition for its Five-Year Graduation Rate (also known as an extended graduation rate).
Schools are selected for awards based on their statewide assessment data for the three previous years. This data is analyzed using the Achievement Index and methodology approved by both Office of the Superintendent and the State Board of Education.
