All four Kirkland City Council positions have challengers, thanks to some last-minute moves Friday.
Longtime Kirkland resident Brad Larssen filed to run for Position No. 3 against John Smiley and Penny Sweet, triggering a primary election in August. Kirkland resident Martin Morgan also filed close to the 5 p.m. deadline to run for Position No. 1 against incumbent Joan McBride.
Larssen, who is vice-chair of Kirkland’s 45th District Democrats, says he filed after several people in the community urged him to run.
“I’ve always stood up for community and working families,” said Larssen, a blue-collar worker who has done manual labor from I-405 construction to building public schools. As a union activist, he has long advocated for ordinary taxpayers and has years of experience as an officer, trustee and delegate.
Larrsen also lost as a write-in candidate for King County Council against incumbent Jane Hague and party-switcher Richard Pope in 2007.
