The Kirkland Parks Foundation has successfully raised over $8,000 from the community to fund the completion of a community learning garden being managed by Seattle Tilth at McAuliffe Park. The foundation exceeded its fundraising goal of $7,800 by raising $8,031. These funds will be donated to Seattle Tilth and used to purchase plants, fruit and nut trees, trellis materials, signage and gardening tools, among other things. The learning garden will provide hands-on learning opportunities for the community with Seattle Tilth including volunteer training and classes, as early as this coming spring.
“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to funding our latest project,” said Kirkland Parks Foundation Executive Director Sally Otten. “This support will make the learning garden a reality. We know it will be well utilized by our entire community.”
Now that sufficient funds have been raised, plants and other materials for the learning garden can be purchased to complete the learning garden. Volunteers have already been hard at work building garden beds and preparing the learning garden for planting in the spring. Seattle Tilth leads volunteer work parties every fourth Thursday of the month, 4-7 p.m. Community members and groups are encouraged to volunteer to help develop the garden! Learning Garden is the first step in a big plan for McAuliffe Park
Seattle Tilth was engaged by the city of Kirkland in the fall of 2014 to create an urban farm at McAuliffe Park that will be a center for learning about sustainable food production, fulfilling the City’s master plan for the park. Volunteer opportunities, classes and other educational programs at the learning garden will be the beginnings of a much bigger vision for engaging people of all ages to learn about growing and eating fresh food and making it available to other community members. McAuliffe Park has a rich history as an historic homestead, farm, and nursery. Stay tuned for new developments and opportunities as an urban farm comes to life at McAuliffe Park.
