Sen. Eric Oemig, D-Kirkland, recently sponsored Julie Luce as a Senate page. Luce, a 14-year-old from Redmond, is a student at Evergreen Junior High School.
Luce enjoys playing guitar, baby sitting, and interior decorating. She plans to become an elementary teacher. Luce thought the mock committee hearing helped her understand the legislative process. “In school we hear the bills go through the committee, but they don’t tell us what exactly goes on in the committee,” she said. “It was nice to have our own to really understand it.”
Sen. Rodney Tom, D-Medina, recently sponsored Bridget Matloff as a Senate page. Matloff, a 14-year-old from Bellevue, is a student at Chinook Middle School.
Matloff enjoys tennis, basketball, volleyball, and karate. She would like to become a lawyer or film director.
Matloff said the experience made her a more informed citizen. “I feel like I got to see behind the scenes and see how long it takes for a bill to pass,” she said.
Senate pages carry mail between offices and relay messages to the Senate floor. Pages attend page school while working at the legislature. Visit www.leg.wa.gov/Senate/Administration/PageProgram.
