Lake Washington High School sophomores Hugo Pontes and Sarah Shuer recently won the first annual LWSD Culinary Competition. Three schools participated in the event (Emerson High School, Lake Washington High School and Redmond High School) with a total of five teams competing.

Each team was given four ingredients that they were required to use in their meals (2.5 oz. skirt steak, one green onion, one clove of garlic and one shallot). Using these ingredients, they were asked to make an entrée that included a starch, vegetable and protein. They then had 90 minutes to make two plates. The teams were then judged on teamwork, sanitation, knife skills, proper cooking technique and overall flavor and appearance of their food. The judges were chefs Wendy Jordan and Michael Jordan, formerly owners of Rosemarys restaurant in Las Vegas, Nev., now chefs in the Seattle Central Community College Culinary Arts Department.
