The Lake Washington School District is seeking volunteers from Kirkland for its LINKS program.
LWSD’s LINKS Program helps students achieve their goals by matching them with a volunteer. Community volunteers meet once a week with a student or a small group of students to practice math, reading, writing or science. Volunteer opportunities include being an academic mentor, providing classroom help, or tutoring students during after school study programs. The needs in middle and high school study programs are increasing and LINKS is recruiting community volunteers to help make a difference in our students’ overall experience at school.
Volunteers are needed throughout Kirkland, Redmond and Sammamish. Currently, LINKS has 40 unmet requests for volunteers from staff. The requests range from kindergarten through high school.
Elementary school requests include classroom volunteers to help kids with reading, writing and math. Middle and high school staff have requested volunteers to work with students during during lunch-ime and after school study programs. While some students are struggling with science and math, others need help with writing and organizational skills. Organizational skills help students keep track of assignments and test dates. Many students are willing to stay after school to receive the added help to prevent falling further behind. They know it’s a place they can go to receive the added help needed to pass a class or bring their grades up. LINKS volunteers help students become more confident in their ability to succeed.
Volunteers are asked to commit to one hour per week. To learn more about LINKS volunteer opportunities, visit the LINKS page on the Lake Washington School District website at www.lwsd.org.
