A 29-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly forcing his way into a woman’s Juanita apartment and sexually assaulting her.
He is currently being held at the King County Jail on a $250,000 bail.
The alleged rape occurred at an apartment complex in the 10000 block of N.E. 138th Place in Juanita.
Probable cause documents state the man lived in the woman’s apartment complex and had met with her Tuesday. The man approached the woman and attempted to make arrangements to go out with her.
“[The woman] told him that she was not interested but [the man] was persistent and told her that he knew she was attracted to him, that he knew she wanted him and kept asking if he could come into her residence,” the documents state.
The woman suggested they could walk their dogs together and made plans for this Sunday.
However, the woman was awoken from a nap at around 3 p.m. Wednesday from a knock at the door. She recognized the man through the peep hole in her door and opened it about 10 inches, the documents continue. The man wanted to know when they were going out, she reminded him Sunday but he asked why Wednesday wasn’t an option. After replying she was tired, the man continued to ask three times why Wednesday wasn’t an option. As she told him he was crossing boundaries, she began to shut the door but he pushed the door open with his shoulder.
The man allegedly forced his way into her home and grabbed her tightly from behind in a “bear hug,” according to the documents. The woman told him to “stop” and “get off,” even suggesting to go for a walk as a way to prevent the encounter from progressing, but he continued to inappropriately touch her.
The woman moved his hand and bit him, and again, tried to get him out of the house by suggesting they go out for drinks. But the documents say he allegedly responded by saying “oh no, you’re not going to play this way.”
The woman was able to loosen his grip by suggesting they go to the living room. As they moved, she was able to break free and grab her phone. She ran out of the back slider to her porch and started screaming for help.
Documents state the man followed her, repeatedly telling her to “stop,” and that he was going to attack her, but the woman was already dialing her phone to call her friend. The man saw her and begged her not to call the police, and only left after the woman shut the back door and ordered him to leave.
Officer Audra Weber with the Kirkland Police Department said after the sexual assault the woman was able to get out of the apartment and call 911. The man fled but police were able to locate him walking on the sidewalk of the apartment complex, less than 100 yards from the assault.
The woman identified the suspect and he was arrested for first-degree rape and burglary at around 8:30 p.m. that evening.
After the man was advised of his Miranda Rights, he still made statements to police that he was “not a rapist” and that he “can’t believe she called the cops.”
According to probable cause documents, the man was already a convicted felon for robbery in the second degree, and a level-one registered sex offender for communicating with a minor for immoral purposes.
The man’s next court hearing is set for April 15.
