Kirkland police are searching for a man who robbed $235 from a Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt cash register last night.

Menchie’s owner Ramon Cruz said the robbery, which occurred at 9:43 p.m., went pretty fast and his employees handled it very smoothly.

“My team members did a fantastic job of just complying,” Cruz said, who recently opened the Totem Lake yogurt shop in August. “Nothing else occurred, nobody was hurt.”

Cruz said a white man wearing a hood and his sweater pulled up over the bottom part of his face told the cashier to open the till. Cruz said he grabbed the money and left, adding that it seemed as though he knew where the store cameras were because his face wasn’t captured on film.

Kirkland police arrived shortly after and stayed until midnight, Cruz said.

“The nice thing was that they got footprints and some fingerprints,” he said.

Cruz said he had no worry or concern about the potential for robberies when he moved his business to Totem Lake because “it looks pretty safe” but now he hopes to speak with some of his neighboring tenants to understand if this has been a problem before.

“I was thinking nobody would be foolish to do it because people can see inside,” he said. “All the lights were on.”

Although the store already has security cameras, Cruz said team members will now be advised to lock the doors as they prepare to close the store, which closes at 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
