New businesses are coming to the Totem Lake area as workers put the last touches on Slater 116, an apartment building set to be complete by the end of this year.
So far, executives have secured TD Curran, Urban Coffee Lounge and Main Street Builders to occupy three of the six retail spaces available within the 10,000-square-foot base.
“It’s been great fun leasing the project,” said Pat Lindsey, the associate vice president of Kidder Mathews, the listing agent for the space. “It’s beautiful, the apartments are renting very well.”
Lindsey said there’s been quite a bit of interest in the remaining three retail spaces that face 124th Avenue Northeast. The listing agent is continuing to look for food-type businesses and quasi-retail or office-type tenants that might include a dentist, optical, interior design or attorney business.
But it’s certainly an exciting time for those who have already committed, tenants say.
TD Curran
TD Curran, an Apple retail specialist store, will celebrate their grand opening at 10 a.m. on Oct. 26 with $5,000 worth of computer accessory freebies and a drawing for a free 13-inch MacBook Pro.
TD Curran is an independent Apple dealer that offers Mac computers, iPhones served by Verizon Wireless, iPads, iPods, accessories and provides a learning center for Apple users to learn the technology for $99 a year.
“The store will be amazing, our best store yet,” said TD Curran owner Troy Curran of the 2,200-square-foot space. “When you come into our stores, it’s a much more warm feeling. You get personalized attention.”
Curran said the store will have cast-concrete displays and a small fireplace at the learning center to make it a comfortable environment, as opposed to an Apple store, which can often feel too sterile, Curran said.
Curran was attracted to the Slater 116 space because he was promised six designated parking spaces for customers.
“If you have a service item, you don’t have to hall it through the mall, a million miles away,” he said.
The Kirkland location is the third TD Curran store, with other locations in Bellingham and Burlington. Curran said another store will soon open in Issaquah and he plans to further expand with a location in Ballard.
Curran founded the company in 1992, which has since recorded sales of $16 million last year and is on track to reaching $35 million this year.
Curran is looking to fill the new service and learning centers with Apple product professionals and Apple certified technicians.
“Our Kirkland location will have 15 employees and is well-equipped to serve our Apple customers in King and Snohomish counties,” Curran said in a news release.
TD Curran’s employees will be Apple certified and undergo continuous training to learn about new products, technical specifications, policies and procedures.
The new store, which will be managed by Mike Crawford, will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Urban Coffee Lounge
Urban Coffee Lounge, a longtime Kirkland small business in Juanita Village, will also expand their business, which specializes in high-quality coffee and espresso. Owners Jeff and Alicia Miner will likely open their new location at Slater 116 in the middle of this December.
“The experience with the first shop has been so nice,” said Jeff Miner, who designed the new space, which is under construction. “So great, that we wanted to get into it more and make this our future.”
Urban Coffee Lounge’s 1,650 square-foot space at Slater 116 will be at the corner of 124th Avenue Northeast and Slater Avenue Northeast.
Jeff Miner said the coffee shop will uphold the modern industrial, yet comfortable, environment the current Urban Coffee Lounge portrays.
“All of our space is very bright and open, a lot of natural light,” he said. “There’s a nice patio area out there … this is more quiet, more beautiful. There’s trees and stuff, so people can come here and be in a more natural setting and it’s not so loud.”
He said choosing the outdoor space was a big decision as they considered where they wanted to put their new store.
The mixed-use building also attracted the Miners because “there’s more of a community, versus just a storefront.”
Jeff Miner said they’re excited about expanding their reputation in the Kirkland community and look forward to providing the same quality experience for their new customers but in a more efficient manner, as they’ve made some changes to their system.
“We have kind of gotten almost to our max here where we’re just busy all the time,” said Kelsey Wilson, the manager at Urban Coffee Lounge. “Our sinks are full all the time, we have a line all throughout the day. So to be able to continue to serve people in a growing way, we need more.”
Wilson said one of their goals, aside from providing speciality coffee, is to create and be a part of a tight-knit community.
“I think that’s why the main success of our location here is because of the great community we’re surrounded by,” she said. “Honestly, our customers make coming to work every day a complete joy.”
Wilson likens their specialty coffee to the quality of craft beer, fine wine and dining.
Wilson and Alicia Minder will manage the Slater 116 Urban Coffee Lounge and hope to hire an additional 10 employees. And the baristas from the original Urban Coffee Lounge will work at the new location as well.
“So all of the faces customers are used to seeing here, they will also see at the new store,” Wilson said. “We’re basically expanding the family and everyone will go back and forth between the locations.”
Jeff Miner said he and his wife eventually hope to open a third location nearby. But for now, they’re embracing the future of their second shop.
“We’re really confident,” he said. “We think it’s going to be really successful.”
Wilson agrees.
“It’s kind of cool to come into something that’s growing and developing and being on the front end of that,” she said.

Essex Property Trust recently purchased the Slater 116 apartments for $29.6 million. The building features 108 apartment units that have already started pre-leasing.
