Joseph “Bud” Perrigo died on April 25, 2009 of congestive heart disease. He passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family. He was 70 years old.
Perrigo was born January 22, 1939 in Kirkland, Wash. He was one of six children born to Joseph and Maude Perrigo. He was a direct descendant of the Perrigo family who owned the first trading post in Redmond. His great-grandfather, William Perrigo, is credited with being one of the town’s founders. William donated land to the city of Redmond for their first water system and Redmond Elementary School There is now a park named for the Perrigo family located in the city of Redmond.
Bud Perrigo grew up in Kirkland, catching crawdads and diving for the pennies that travelers threw into Lake Washington from the Kirkland ferry dock. His family would occasionally make the all-day trip to the Farmers Food Market (now Pike Place Market) in Seattle, using the ferry from Kirkland that crossed Lake Washington. Perrigo attended Lake Washington High School, but quit before he finished and at the age of 16, to join the Navy.
After serving his time in the Navy, Perrigo moved back to Kirkland and held various jobs until he met Marcella Edwards. In the summer of 1961, Bud met, courted and married Marcella in the span of three months. They were married at the Rose Hill Presbyterian Church on October 20th, 1961 in Kirkland.
Perrigo held a number of different jobs in his life, including working as a hod-carrier, a postal worker and partner in the State Street Texaco service station. He eventually retired from King County after 27 years of public service in flood control.
Perrigo was an involved Kirkland Eagle Club member for over 30 years. He was best known for his chili and participation in the Camper Club. He also belonged to Kirkland First Baptist Church and drove the Sunday School bus for a number of years. Perrigo loved camping and telling stories around the bonfire. His favorite times were grilling ribeye steaks for his family, and playing cribbage with his grandchildren. He touched many lives with his generous and loving heart. He will be missed.
He is survived by his wife Marcella, two daughters and their husbands, Denise and Ron Ainslie of Redmond, and Melody and Greg Young of Everson, and four grandchildren (Briar, Katy, Tyas and Rachel). Survivors also include two brothers, Bill Perrigo of Darrington, WA and Art Perrigo of Corvallis, Oreg., and one sister Pat Konkler of Casper, Wyom.
A memorial service will be held at the Kirkland Eagles Club at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 15. Remembrances may be made to Group Health Hospice.
