Obituary | Zack McCoy Stark

Kirkland resident Zack McCoy Stark’s motto was “never give up.”

Diagnosed in childhood with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Zack responded with strength, courage and an iron will.

In a Dec. 1, 2008 story, he told the Reporter: “Keep swimming. Keep your will to survive. Don’t let people tell you no or that you can’t do something. Just keep swimming,” he recalled from the Disney-Pixar film, “Finding Nemo.”

The artist was a fighter until the last moment. He died Sunday, Sept. 6. He was age 22.

Zack attended Lake Washington and Best high schools. As a young artist, he inspired all who met him with his compassion, zest for life, strong will, creativity and positive attitude.

A public celebration of his life was held Sept. 12 at Eastside Foursquare Church, Bothell and attended by more than 200 people.

“Zack said he doesn’t want his illness Duchenne MD to ever happen to anyone again,” said his mother, Koren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parent Project Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, parentprojectmd.org, to find a cure for this illness. Condolences and PPMD donations can also be sent to Koren Stark, PO Box 8270, Kirkland, WA, 98034.

He is survived by his parents Mike and Koren Stark (Kirkland), grand-parents Bob and Claudette Stark (Houston), Norman and Brenda Abdallah (Austin); and many loving relatives, including Aunt Paula Pentecost and Uncle Rick Stark who provided continuous care over the years.
