One sent to hospital in Kirkland house fire, two exotic birds dead | Update

A resident was sent to a local hospital for observation after Kirkland firefighters responded to a “well involved” fire in the Highlands neighborhood the night of Feb.5.

Dispatchers received the call at 8:19 p.m. and firefighters were at the house within three minutes, according to Battalion Chief Larry Peabody with the Kirkland Fire Department.

The house, located at the 11700 block of NE 105th Lane, had flames up to the roof. Firefighters were “driven back by the intense heat and flames” as they approached the fire from the back of the house.

After a survey, they found a 62-year-old woman, the sole occupant of the house, covered in soot and disoriented. It was later determined she had carbon monoxide poisoning, but was treated at EvergreenHealth Medical Center.

It took about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire, during which firefighters saved two dogs, one turtle and a lizard. Two exotic birds could not be saved.

There’s an estimated $395,000 worth of damage, according to Peabody.

The cause is still under investigation, but is not being considered suspicious.

Bellevue and Redmond firefighters also responded.
