If politics were boxing – and sometimes it certainly seems that way – then we have finished with the sparing and its now time for the main event. In other words, the general election will be nothing like the primary.
Election Day is still a couple months away, but I’m ready to make some predictions on how our state will vote. I think Washington will cast its votes for Democrat Barack Obama for president and Republican Dino Rossi for governor. Here’s why.

Fifth grade students bound for Kamiakin Junior High School can sign up for beginning band Sept. 18. Registration will run 8:15 to 9 a.m. in the band room at Kamiakin, 14111 132nd Ave. N.E., Kirkland. The band is open to all fifth-graders who attend Frost, Keller, Muir and Franklin elementary schools, as well as to homeschoolers and Kamiakin-bound “Quest” students. Hopelink’s Eastside Literacy and other programs need volunteers to help adults learn to read or earn a General Education Development (GED) diploma, assist non-native English speakers to improve their English and provide help to achieve many other tasks.

Lake Washington School District (LWSD) students continue to perform well on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL), according to the preliminary 2008 test score results announced by the Office for the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Scores were significantly higher than state averages in every grade and subject tested.
Assessment, diagnosis and developing a care plan for younger, disabled adults or older adults over the age of 60 who may have substance abuse issues is now available through Evergreen Healthcare’s Behavioral Health Geriatric Regional Assessment Team. The new program started recently.
Lake Washington Technical College (LWTC) is starting three new health care degree programs. The three new programs are: massage therapy (starting fall quarter 2008); physical therapist assistant (starting winter quarter 2009); and occupational therapy assistant (program starting in 2009, with introduction courses starting fall quarter 2008).
Between Wednesday, Aug. 13 and Tuesday, Aug. 19, the Kirkland Police Department reported 274 traffic violations, 26 noise complaints, 23 thefts, 20 car accidents, 20 alarm calls, 16 vehicle prowls and 14 assaults. At least 58 people were arrested.
Kirkland firefighters hit the streets in full force recently to collect $10,000 in donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Slowed by the summer rain, afternoon traffic in Juanita also had to contend with a water main break Aug. 25 that shut down part of 98th Avenue.
While national and state mean scores for college-bound seniors dipped in 2007, Lake Washington School District (LWSD) seniors scored higher on all three tests on the SAT college prep test. The percent of students in the district taking the test dropped slightly, from 72 percent to 71 percent. District students continue to score well above state and national averages.
