For most, sailing is a relaxing pastime. For Bryan Elwell it took him straight to jail – twice.

According to King County charging papers, the owner of a 35-foot boat docked at the Kirkland Marina behind Anthony’s Homeport noticed that his $200 generator was sitting out on the main deck of his vessel May 18. The owner also saw that the door lock to the downstairs living area was broken and a pungent odor was coming from his boat. Elwell was inside the boat pouring some sort of liquid into Lake Washington. The man ran from the boat as the owner followed him and called 911.

The owner of the boat directed Kirkland police officers to where Elwell was located. Upon contact, he identified himself and admitted to being on the docks.

Elwell ranted about the boat not being locked, stating, “It wasn’t locked. If it were locked, there would not be a problem.”

He was arrested for first degree vehicle prowling and attempted third degree theft and is in the King County Jail.

Earlier this year, Elwell was also arrested for breaking into and staying on a boat at the Center for Wooden Boats in Seattle on Feb. 22.
