The A&K Railroad Materials crew hauled of the last load of rails that they removed from the Cross Kirkland Corridor on Tuesday.

Workers began rail removal on Aug. 22 along the 5.75 miles of rail line that once comprised a portion of the Eastside Rail Corridor. That effort required the removal of roughly 19,000 oak ties and 130,000 spikes and spike plates.

The last task for the A&K Materials crew is to grade the ballast, which it will do this week.  Grading the ballast will prepare it for the interim trail construction, as well as the Oct. 27 community walk, planned by the city of Kirkland.
