Beginning Jan. 27, crews will close State Route 520 in both directions for the weekend to finish removing an old westbound off-ramp spanning the highway.

From 11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, until 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 30, crews will close both directions of SR 520 and all associated on- and off-ramps between 92nd Avenue Northeast and Montlake Boulevard, along with the new floating bridge’s bicycle-and-pedestrian path. The on-ramp from Montlake Boulevard to westbound SR 520 will remain open.

The work requires careful removal of the old ramp due to its proximity to new westbound lanes, the existing highway and its location over Lake Washington. Late last year, crews removed half of the decommissioned off-ramp that crosses over SR 520’s existing lanes. Contractor crews working on the West Approach Bridge North (WABN) project will remove the ramp that not only passes over SR 520’s lanes but also over the lake, just south of Marsh Island in the Arboretum.

Other Washington State Department of Transportation projects will use the closure to work over the weekend. Crews with the Floating Bridge and Landings project will complete maintenance and paving work. On the Eastside, crews will replace lighting under the Evergreen Point Road lid. The tolling division will also use the closure to unveil new toll-collection signs that will begin displaying toll rates Tuesday, Feb, 4.

Once complete, the new WABN structure will carry three westbound lanes and a bike and pedestrian path between the new floating bridge and Montlake Boulevard. Complete with a new off-ramp, the new bridge is expected to open later this year.
