The city of Kirkland this week is urging residents in the Market, Norkirk, Bridle Trails and South Rose Hill neighborhoods to prepare for a series of one-day closures to their neighborhood roads.

The closures begin Aug. 7 on more than a dozen sections of roads in those neighborhoods.

Aug. 7 is when Kirkland’s street preservation contractor will begin applying a layer of slurry seal to nearly 30 lane miles of neighborhood roads in those two neighborhoods.

Blackline plans to finish the street preservation job on Aug. 15, weather permitting.

In the days leading up to Aug. 7, crews will be removing the scheduled roads’ existing striping.

Crews will begin preparing each road for the slurry seal process at 7 a.m. on the day of construction. They will close the roads at 8 a.m. to give residents enough time to drive to work. The roads will remain closed to travel until workers remove the “Road Closed” signs. Most roads should be ready for travel by 5 p.m.

Kirkland has used slurry seal for nearly a decade to extend by seven years most of its 400-plus lane miles of neighborhood roads.

Kirkland is applying slurry seal this year to 30 lanes miles of neighborhood roads, double what was possible before Kirkland’s voters approved the 2012 streets levy.
