After more than a year of work by committed students and staff, Juanita High School has been named a Level 1 King County Green School. Students in the JHS Earth Corps group developed a composting program and a music video to promote the program to fellow students. The group’s adviser, Jim Clark, said the school also cleared out some items considered hazardous waste – such as old paint from the shop and drama classrooms.
Students said the educational component of the program – getting the student body to sort compostable materials from the rest of their waste – was the most difficult. That’s where the video came in.
Senior Sarah Dunsmore wrote the music and other students helped with the video, “Just Compost,” which was played for all JHS students during homeroom. They are currently working to complete a second video, “No More Wasting,” for Earth Day. Senior Riley Hewitson said, “We are hoping people will start doing more at their own homes.”
