Upgrades coming for Kirkland’s Marina Park boat ramp

Kirkland’s only city-maintained boat ramp will be getting a much-needed face lift following the summer boating season.

The upgrades center around wear-and-tear of the ramp, which is located at the end of Market Street on the north side of Marina Park. The new ramp won’t be any wider than the current setup, but it will be a little longer.

“The propeller wash from boats has created a mound at the bottom [of the lake], and it’s difficult for boats to get in and out,” said Christian Geitz with the Kirkland planning department. “The new ramp will be more gradual and further into the water, but not deeper than it needs to be.”

The city also plans to dredge — Geitz said the word is used very loosely in the proposal — the small underwater mound to allow for boats with a deeper draft to access the ramp.

There will also be additional grading done to the lakebed to help ensure the new ramp’s stability, but the “walls and pier stay the same,” Geitz said, adding that the ramp will remain with only one lane.

Work will likely begin at the end of September or beginning of October.
